오피셜 블로그에 공개된 캐릭터 비하인드 스토리입니다. 영화 개봉 일주일 정도 전에 사전 공개되었고, 알렉스 가랜드씨가 직접 쓴 것이라고 합니다. 영화 제작 당시에 배우들과 스텝들에게 전달한 내용이라고 하는군요.

영화에서는 캐릭터들의 과거나 성격 등을 친절히 보여주진 않기 때문에 캐릭터들의 행동을 보다 더 잘 이해할 수 있는 힌트가 될 수도 있습니다. 꽤 흥미로운 사실들도 포함되어 있어요. (아래 번역에는 오역이 포함되어 있을 수 있습니다.)

캐파(Capa)

캐파는 17세 때 미국의 저명한 과학 저널 잡지에 암흑 물질(dark matter)에 관한 논문을 발표했다. 암흑 물질로부터 에너지를 생성해내는 방법에 대한 이론이었다.
When Capa was seventeen, he wrote a paper which he submitted to America's foremost scientific journals. It contributed to the understanding of dark matter, and in particular a theory for a controlled method releasing its energy.

이미 암흑 물질 이론은 상당히 진전되어 있었지만, 캐파의 이론은 이카루스 I 프로젝트를 위해 개발 중이던 행성 폭탄(Stellar Bomb)의 원리를 구체화하는 데 결정적인 뒷받침을 하였다.
Although dark matter theory was already well advanced, Capa's theory assisted in the formation of the principle on which the Stellar Bomb was constructed for the Icarus I mission.

하지만 첫번째 이카루스 프로젝트 때에는 캐파의 나이가 어려서 직접 참여할 수는 없었다. 대신 이후 수 년 동안 캐파는 자신의 연구를 계속 해나갔고, 결국 첫번째 프로젝트가 실패로 결정되고 두번째 프로젝트를 착수할 때에는 암흑 물질 폭탄에 관해서는 이미 세계적인 전문가 수준에 이르러 있었다.
Capa was too young to have accompanied this first Icarus mission. But in the intervening years, Capa continued his research. By the time it was realised that the first mission had failed, and preparations for a second mission began, Capa was the world's foremost expert on the dark matter bomb.

캐파는 이카루스 멤버 중 유일하게 우주 탐사에 관련된 경력도 없고, 이전에 훈련을 받은 적도 없다. 이런 점 때문에 대다수의 멤버들에게는 동료라기 보다는 핵탄두 분리 지점까지 무사히 데리고 가야 하는 승객 정도의 위치를 가질 수 밖에 없다.
Because Capa is the only member of the crew who is not, by history and training, and astronaut, he is an outsider. In this respect, much of the crew see him as effectively a piece of valuable equipment, which must be transported intact to the delivery point.

반면에 다른 멤버들을 이끌어가는 입장에 있는 카네다는 캐파가 소외감을 느끼지 않도록 배려를 해주려고 신경쓰고 있다.
Kaneda, however, feels differently towards Capa. He feels protective in a way which is partly paternal. He knows that it is hard for Capa being an outsider, a passenger, and goes out of his way to make Capa feel included.

카네다가 미처 파악하지 못한 것은 캐파가 혼자 있는 편을 더 좋아한다는 점이다. 캐파는 핵탄두실의 어두컴컴한 실내에서 혼자 작업하는 걸 가장 편하게 여긴다.
What Kaneda doesn't fully realised is that Capa is by nature a loner. He is perfectly content with his own company, working in the dark interior of the Stellar Bomb.

서릴은 이런 점을 파악하고 있고, 그 때문에 캐파와 가깝게 지낸다. 캐파 역시 서릴과 마음이 맞다고 생각하고 있다.
Searle does realise this - in fact, it is Capa's self - contained quality that Searle likes. And Capa likes Searle equally. The two of them get on: they talk the same language, and have a similar sense of humour. Although they are both fundamentally loners, the relationship between them is actually the strongest bond in the crew.

캐파는 종종 카네다와 체스를 두곤 하는데, 자신이 카네다보다 더 잘 두기 때문에 항상 카네다에게 흰 말을 내어준다. 가끔 카네다가 이기도록 해주기도 한다.
Capa is better than Kaneda at chess, and so he always lets Kaneda play white. Capa sometimes lets Kaneda win.

여기에 기록되진 않았지만, 영화의 나레이션에서 알 수 있듯이 캐파의 풀네임은 '로버트 캐파(Robert Capa)'입니다. 동명의 실존 인물이 있습니다만, 가랜드씨가 염두에 두었는지는 알려지지 않았습니다. 실존하는 '로버트 카파'는 세계 대전 당시의 종군기자로, 그의 성을 딴 '카파이즘(Capaism)'이 '생명의 위험을 무릅쓰는 기자 정신'을 뜻하는 단어로 사용되고 있기도 합니다.

캐시(Cassie)

캐시는 군 출신으로, 미 공군에서 파일럿으로 활동했다. 하지만 나중에는 자신이 군 생활에는 적합하지 못하다는 것을 알게 되었다. 캐시는 경쟁적인 편도 아니고, 남성적인 계급 사회에 어울리는 것도 쉽지 않았다.
Cassie's background is military - she entered the space program through her experience as a pilot in the US air-force. But she does not fit the stereotype of military personnel. She is non-competitive. She has no particular interest in, or attraction to, machismo. She doesn't have an automatic deferential response to rank or duty.

문학이나 예술에 관심이 많은 편으로, 이카루스 멤버들 중 유일하게 개인 물품으로 책을 가지고 왔다.
Cassie has a personal interest in the arts. She was the only crew member who packed books in her kit-bag as personal possessions.

캐시는 선천적으로 휴머니스트다. 다른 사람들을 좋아하고 끊임없이 주변 사람들에게 관심을 가진다. 타인을 무시하지도 않고, 그 사람의 모든 점을 수용하려고 한다. 그녀는 모든 사람들이 근본적으로는 선하다고 믿고 있다.
Both instinctively and academically, Cassie is a humanist. She likes people, she cares about people. Her sense of mankind is no-cynical and forgiving: she would believe that, in general and as a default position, people are good.

하지만 신은 믿지 않는다. 신이 존재한다는 어떤 증거도 본 적이 없기 때문이다. 대신 캐시는 그녀 자신을 믿는다.
Cassie is an atheist. She doesn’t believe in God because she sees no reason for God to exist. She is confident in herself. She is comfortable within her own skin.

On the psychological profiles about who would cope best with the long-term deep-space mission, Cassie's score was the highest. There were pilots in the space program who matched and exceeded her skill, but none that were seen as more suitable for the stresses and pressures of the mission.

결혼은 하지 않았고, 다른 멤버들과 같이 아이도 없다. 하지만 지구 궤도를 떠나기 4개월 전에 임신한 것을 알게 되었는데, 아이의 아버지는 그녀만이 알고 있다. 그는 캐시가 자신의 아이를 가졌었다는 사실을 전혀 모른다.
She has no primary partner, and, as with all the crew, she has no children. However, four months before the mission left Earth Orbit, Cassie became pregnant. The identity of the father was known only to her: he was never aware that Cassie was briefly carrying his child.

캐시는 6주 뒤에 중절 수술을 받았다. 이카루스 멤버 중에는 서릴만이 그 사실을 알고 있으며, 신체 테스트 때 다른 의사들이 혈액 검사 결과를 알지 못하도록 도와주었다. 수술 이후에 캐시는 삶과 죽음에 대해 좀더 예민해졌다.
She terminated the pregnancy after six weeks. The only member of the crew who knows this is Searle, who assisted her in hiding her blood test results from the other doctors in the space program. The termination of her pregnancy had a subtle effect on her outlook - a discreet emotional accent in her perception of life, and death. This nuance might have skewed her psychological profiling, had the most crucial psych-tests not already been carried out.

캐시는 매일 태양으로 떨어지는 꿈을 꾼다.
She dreams continuously about the surface of the sun.

캐시가 하고 다니는 목걸이는 언듯 보면 십자가로 오인할 수도 있지만, 비행기 모양입니다. 소품으로 만들어진 이카루스 패치에는 캐시의 이름이 '캐시디(Cassidy)'로 기재되어 있습니다. '캐시(Cassie)'는 애칭 같네요.

코라존(Corazon)

코라존의 부모는 중국인과 필리핀인으로, 마닐라에서 태어난 코라존은 어릴 때 중국 대륙으로 옮겨갔다. 트레이나 카네다와 마찬가지로, 아시아 Space Program에 참여하고 있다가 미국으로 옮겨서 이카루스 프로젝트에 참여했다.
Corazon was born in Manila, but her Chinese/Filipino parents moved to the Chinese mainland when she was a young girl. She worked in the Pan-Asian Space program, but, like Trey and Kaneda, was drafted into the US program to work on the Icarus project.

그 이전에 이미 중국 Space Program에서부터 우주 탐사 경력을 가지고 있으며, 고효율 산소 생산을 위한 식물의 재배를 연구하고 있다. 지난 15년 동안 코라존은 달 기지에서 산소 생산과 재활용에 대한 업무를 감독해왔다.
Corazon is a career astronaut from the Chinese space program. Her area of spacialised knowledge is the cultivation of high-yield oxygen-producing plants. For the last fifteen years, Corazon has been based on the international Moon stations, where she supervised the oxygen production and recycling program.

이카루스의 다른 멤버들이 이번 임무를 인류의 미래를 구하는 것이라 생각하고 있는 반면, 코라존은 보다 더 넒은 의미의 생명을 지키는 것이라고 생각하고 있다. 그녀는 지구 자체를 하나의 생물권으로 지켜낼 수 있기를 바라고 있다. 인류는 단지 그 중의 한 부분일 뿐이다.
Whereas everyone else on the crew see their mission as to secure the future of mankind, Corazon sees the protection of life in broader terms. Her wish would be to protect Earth as a single biosphere, of which mankind is just one part.

그녀는 자신이 재배하는 식물과 산소 정원(Oxygen Garden)에 대해 남다른 애착을 가지고 있어서, 특히 이카루스의 다른 멤버들보다 식물을 더 소중히 여기는 경향이 있다. 정원이 파괴된다는 것은 그녀에게는 가까운 사람의 죽음과 다를 바가 없으며, 결국 캡틴 카네다의 죽음보다는 산소 정원의 소실이 그녀에게는 더 충격적으로 느껴지게 된다.
Corazon's feelings for her plants and the Oxygen Garden are more intense than her feelings for any of the crew. When the plants are destroyed, Corazon is bereaved. In emotional terms, she feels the loss of her garden more deeply than the loss of Captain Kaneda.

모든 멤버를 통틀어, 그녀와 성격적으로 잘 맞는 멤버는 메이스이다. 물론 메이스보다 코라존이 더 침착하고 흥분하지 않는다는 점이 있지만, 어쨌든 둘 다 현실주의자이며 경험주의자라는 점에서는 공통된다. 둘 모두 자신의 손으로 직접 작업하는 일을 하고 있으며, 특히 둘 모두 감상적인 타입은 아니다.
Out of all the crew, her natural ally is Mace. Although she is calmer and less hot-blooded the Mace, they are both pragmatists. The both work with their hands. And most importantly, they are not sentimental.

코라존은 멤버들 중 유일하게 지구실(Earth Room)에서의 처방을 받지 않았다. 그녀에게 있어 지구실의 효과는 인위적인 것이며, 차라리 산소 정원에서 시간을 보내는 쪽이 훨씬 더 그녀 자신에게는 효과적이다.
Corazon is the only crew member who has never used the calming properties of the Earth Room. For her, the Earth Room is simply artificial, and she prefers instead to spend solitary time in her beloved Oxygen Garden.

코라존은 결혼은 했지만, 다른 멤버처럼 아이는 없다. 마지막으로 남편에게 메시지를 보낼 때, 그녀는 아무런 말도 하지 않았다. 대신 정확히 1분 동안 스크린을 바라보고 있다가 미소를 지어보인 후 그대로 메시지를 전송했다.
Corazon is married, but like all the crew of Icarus II, she has no children. In her final recorded message to her husband, she spoke no words. Instead she gazed at the screen for exactly one minute, then smiled, and sent the message home.

그녀는 사면을 깍아 만든 넓은 논이 나오는 꿈을 꾸곤 한다.
When Corazon sleeps, she dreams of rice-field terraces cut into hillsides.

영화 안에서 다른 대원들은 주로 '코리'라고 줄여 부릅니다. 스페인어에 'corazon'이라는 단어가 실제로 있습니다. 남성형 명사로 심장, 마음 등을 나타낸다는군요.

하비(Harvey)

하비는 베테랑 US Space Program 멤버이며, 이카루스 I 프로젝트부터 참여해왔다. 대학원 때 이카루스 프로젝트에 참여하여, 이카루스 I의 통신 시스템의 초급 엔지니어로 시작했다.
Harvey is a veteran of the US space program, and is one of the few members of the Icarus II crew to have had any involvement in the Icarus I mission. As a young graduate into the Icarus project, he worked as a junior engineer on the Icarus I comms system.

어릴 때부터 좋아하던 여성과 결혼했으며, 아직 아이는 없다.
He is married to his childhood sweetheart. They are without children.

Light Box 통신 시스템(Light Box Comms System)을 발명했는데, 그것이 이카루스 II 프로젝트에 적용되면서 크루로 편성되었다. 하비가 독창적으로 개발한 이 통신 시스템은 특이하게 굵은 광선으로 이루어져 있으며, 이 광선 내부에서는 방사능 폭풍과 태양의 플레어로 인한 간섭이 차단된다.
He earned his place on the Icarus II mission partly as a result of his invention of the LIGHT BOX COMMS SYSTEM. Built into his console, when he immerses himself in this oddly thick beam of light, he can cancel out the noise of background interference from radiation storms and solar flares.

그리고 그에게 있어서 그 광선 안에서 깨끗하고 맑은 소리를 듣는 것이 먼 우주로의 임무에서 비롯되는 압력과 스트레스를 해소하는 방법이기도 하다.
It is this space he retreats to, of purity of sound, to escape from the stresses and pressures of the deep-space mission.

하비가 이카루스 II 프로젝트에서 맡게 된 위치는 전적으로 그의 노력과 능력 때문이다. 그는 뛰어난 엔지니어로, 메이스나 트레이, 캐시가 맡은 분야의 업무를 거의 동등한 수준으로 수행할 수 있다.
Harvey earned his rank on the Icarus II mission partly by hard work and all-round abilities. He is a fine engineer, and would be able to perform most of Mace, Trey, and Cassie's duties at an equal level.

체력이나 건강도 매우 좋아서, 팀을 대상으로 한 체력 테스트에서 항상 상위 수준에 랭크되었다.
His physical fitness and general health is extremely good. He consistently scored highest in crew fitness tests.

또한 심리 테스트에서도 꽤 높은 평점을 받아서, 믿을만하고 침착한 멤버로 인정받았다. 하지만 이 심리 테스트에서 드러나지 않게 자신의 약점을 감추었는데, 바로 그의 아내에 대한 애정이다. 간단히 말하자면, 그는 아내를 그리워하고 있다. 매일 아내의 꿈을 꾸며, 가장 두려워하는 것은 바로 임무를 성공하지 못하여 아내의 곁으로 되돌아가지 못하는 것이다.
He also scored extremely highly on psych tests, as a dependable and stable member of the crew. However, in the psych tests, he managed to disguise (and they failed to detect) his Achilles heel... which is his attachment to his wife. Simply, he misses her. He dreams of her every night. Hi is terrified by the idea that he will not survive the mission, and never see her again.

그리고 이로 인한 나약함이 그의 의지와 판단을 좀먹는 원인이 된다.
It is this weakness that eats away inside him.

크루 중에서는 유일하게 신(God)을 믿는 것 같습니다. 물론 카네다가 불교이긴 하지만, 절대적인 신을 숭배한다던지 하는 종교로는 하비가 유일한 것 같군요.

카네다(Kaneda)

카네다는 쿄토에서 태어나, 코라존이나 트레이와 마찬가지로 수 년 동안 아시아 Space Program에 참여했다. 그 이후 처음에는 미국의 이카루스 프로젝트로 옮겨갔다가, 다시 지구 궤도 기지로 옮겨가서 활동했다.
Kaneda was born in Kyoto. He worked for many years in the Pan-Asian Space Program, with both Corazon and Trey. He was then transferred to the Icarus Project, based first in America, and then on the orbiting international space station.

나이로 보나 우주 비행 시간 상으로 보나, 카네다는 이카루스 멤버들 중 가장 뛰어난 우주 탐사 경력을 가지고 있다. 그가 두번째 미션을 이끌 게 된 것은 당연한 결과이며, 이카루스 II의 멤버 모두 그를 믿고 따르고 있다. 누구도 카네다의 권위나 판단에 대해서 반발하거나 의문을 표하는 일이 없다.
In both age and time spent in space flight, he is the most experienced astronaut of the crew. He was a natural choice to lead the second mission. The entire crew of Icarus II are deferential to him. No one questions his authority or judgement.

카네다는 결혼을 하지 않았고, 아이도 없다. 그는 불교신자이며, 우주선 내 그의 개인 공간에 작은 사당을 마련해놓았다.
Kaneda has no wife and no children. He is Buddhist. He has an unforced and pragmatic spiritualism. In his sleeping quarters, he has a small shrine.

다른 사람이 보기에 카네다는 침착하고 규정대로 팀을 이끌고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 그는 이카루스 I의 운명에 대해 지나칠 정도로 사로잡혀 있어, 첫번째 임무의 실패에 대해 끊임없이 생각한다.
Outwardly, Keneda is a model of calm, and he leads by example. But privately, he obsesses about fate of Icarus I. He questions and re-questions the failure of the previous mission.

카네다는 자신이 다른 멤버들을 이끄는 가장으로 느끼고 있는데, 가장 나이가 어린데다 우주 탐사 경력이 전무한 캐파에게는 좀더 신경쓰고 있다. 캐파가 단순한 승객 취급을 받으며 겉도는 상황을 감당하기 힘들 거라는 것을 알기 때문에 좀더 소속감을 느낄 수 있도록 배려해주고 있다.
Kaneda feels paternalistic towards all his crew, but in particular, Capa. This is partly because Capa is the youngest, but also because Capa is the only crew member who is not a career astronaut. He knows that it is hard for Capa being an outsider, a passenger, and goes out of his way to make Capa feel included.

카네다가 임무를 떠나 친분을 유지하고 싶어하는 멤버는 서릴이다.
Kaneda's closest intellectual equal is Searle. Searle is the only member of the crew with whom he would maintain a friendship outside the context of the mission.

유일하게 풀네임이 공개되어 있습니다. 풀네임으로 봐선 일본 애니메이션 '아키라'가 떠오릅니다. 이에 대한 언급은 전혀 팬 포럼에서도 없긴 하지만(...) '아키라'의 주인공 캐릭터 중 한명의 이름이 '카네다'이죠. 그건 그렇고, '아키라(彰)'라는 일본어는 '빛(나다)'을 의미합니다.

메이스(Mace)

메이스는 과학자이긴 하지만, 어떤 면에서는 기술자이기도 하다. 그의 전문분야는 엔지니어링으로, 이카루스 컴퓨터 시스템을 구현한 프로그램 코드에는 크게 관심이 없다. 이카루스 시스템의 코드는 상당히 복잡하고 방대해서, 그 코드를 생성하기 위한 다른 컴퓨터가 필요할 정도이다. 메이스가 명확하게 이해하고 있는 것은 그러한 프로그래밍 코드를 실행하기 위한 본체 기판의 회로 시스템과 그 메카니즘이다.
Mace is in some senses a blue-collar scientist: his specialist area is Engineering. He doesn't understand the code programming that creates the Icarus Flight Computer - because no one does. The coding behind Icarus is so immensely complex that it required other computers to generate it. But what Mace does understand is the circuitry mapping and the mechanics that run it.

그의 부모는 모두 미공군 파일럿으로, 공군 기지에서 어린 시절을 보냈다. 그런 탓에 군 내부, 혹은 군과 관계된 사람에 대해서는 처음부터 신뢰를 하는 반면, 캐파와 같이 군과는 무관한 사람들에게는 거리를 두게 되는 편이다.
His family background is military. He grew up on air-bases; both parents were pilots. He has an innate belief in the chain of command, and an innate distrust of those - such as Capa - who sit outside the chain of command.

메이스는 매사를 현실적이고 경험에 의해 판단한다. 책을 읽을 때에도 실용서적 위주로 읽고, 여가 시간에도 음악을 듣는 대신 푸시업을 하는 등 실제적으로 자신에게 이로운 일을 하면서 보낸다. 그가 머리를 짧게 깍은 이유도 그 편이 더 생활하기에 편리하기 때문이다. 정직하고 자긍심은 있지만, 지나치게 자만하지는 않는다.
His mind is practical and three-dimensional, not abstract. He has never read a book for pleasure. He would rather spend spare time doing push-ups than listening to music. He cuts his hair short because life is easier that way. He is honest. He has no vanity, but he does have pride.

수성에 이를 정도로 오랜 비행 끝에 결국 임무의 중요성을 잊고 자신을 제어할 수 없었던 점에 대해서는 스스로도 그래서는 안되었다고 생각하고 있다. 이카루스의 모든 멤버들 중에서 유일하게 이번 임무를 성공적으로 마칠 수 있을 거라고 생각하고 있다.
Mace is disgusted with himself when he finds that, over the long journey to Mercury, he has lost his focus on the mission. The fist-fight with Capa is his epiphany. He makes it a catalyst for his focus to return - and from that moment on, his focus on the mission is total. He is the only crew member whose vision remains unclouded in respect of this goal.

그는 캐파와는 달리 감정적이진 않다. 단 한벌의 수트를 캐파에게 입힌 것도 캐파가 임무를 완수하는데 있어서 가장 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있기 때문이다. 만약 임무를 위해 살인이 필요하다면 그는 망설이지 않고 그 자신이 나서서 맡아 할 것이다.
He is unsentimental. He doesn't like Capa, but he immediately gives Capa the suit for the transfer between Icarus One and Two, because he knows Capa is more central to the mission's success. He is morally uncomplicated. If killing Trey is what is required to complete the mission, he'll support the action, and do the job himself.

게다가 주변을 의식하지 않기 때문에, 분위기를 띄우기 위한 농담 같은 것도 거의 하지 않는 편이다.
He has a dry sense of humour which is for his own benefit rather than anyone else's. That is to say, he doesn't crack a joke in order to make other people laugh.

메이스는 즉흥적으로 흥분하는 타입은 아니다. 굳이 말하자면 그 반대로, 항상 명확하게 상황을 판단하고 자기 감정을 주체하지 못하는 법이 없다. 하지만 캐파와 관련된 일이라면 예외적으로 침착함을 잃고 흥분하는 경우도 종종 있다.
He is not a firebrand. If anything, he is the opposite. His mind is clear, and is not cluttered by the confusions of adrenaline or passion. Losing his temper with Capa is the exception; not the rule.

그는 꿈의 내용을 거의 기억하지 못한다. 하지만 그 자신도 놀랐지만, 가끔 캐시가 나오는 꿈을 꾸곤 한다.
He never remembers his own dreams. If he did, he'd find, to his surprise, that he often dreams of Cassie.

메이스의 풀네임은 공개되지 않았지만, 서릴과의 상담 장면에서 컴퓨터 스크린에 신상명세가 표시될 때 언듯 풀네임이 나왔습니다-만, 컴퓨터 스크린이 원체 흐릿하게 나온데다 순식간에 지나가서 정확한 확인은 할 수 없었네요. 극장에서 두 번 확인했습니다만, 내 눈에는 '제임스 메이스(James Mace)' 같이 보였습니다. 외국의 팬들 중에는 '메이스(Mace)'가 '매튜(Matthew)'의 변형으로, 성이 아니라 이름이라고 여기는 분들도 있습니다만, 메이스가 성인 것은 확실합니다.

서릴(Searle)

Searle is the only crew member who did not have a counter-part on Icarus I. Icarus I had a doctor, but no psychiatrist.

Endless theories were developed and explored for the failure of Icarus I. Searle was the primary advocate for the theory that the failure of the mission might have been for psychological reasons - the psychiatric collapse of one or all of the crew.

서릴은 먼 우주 탐사에서의 각종 영향력과 그 때문에 발생할 수 있는 심리, 정신적 효과에 대해 오랜 기간 동안 연구해왔고, 그 결과 지구실(Earth Room)을 개발할 수 있었다. 자신의 연구 결과에 따라 이카루스 II에 참가할 담당의는 반드시 수준급의 정신과 상담을 병행할 수 있는 사람이어야 한다고 주장했다. 그리고 의도한 결과는 아니지만, 결국 자신이 이카루스 II에 탑승하게 되었다.
He spent years researching the effects of deep-space travel and its effects on the mind - during which time he developed and created the Earth Room. As a consequence of his research, he argued strongly that the Med Officer on Icarus II should also be a qualified psychiatrist. It was an argument he won. Its unintended consequence was that Searle himself was chosen as the Psych Officer for the mission.

서릴 자신의 심리 상태는 아주 안정적이다. 뛰어난 유머 감각도 가지고 있다. 즉흥적이거나 경솔한 결정을 내리는 편도 아니다. 하지만 동시에 그는 감정적으로 다른 사람들과는 동떨어져 있다. 뭔가에 초연한 듯 하게도 보이며, 방관자인 것처럼도 보인다. 이런 요소들 때문에 다른 사람들(특히 메이스)이 보기에는 서릴이 전문가답지 않다고 생각하는 경우도 있다.
His own psychological profile is of a man who is extremely emotionally stable. He is even-tempered. He has a good sense of humour. He is not given to panic or hasty decisions. However, he is also a man who is eternally separate from other people. He is detached. A watcher. Unjudgemental. Oddly unconcerned. This can make him appear (particularly to Mace) unprofessional.

서릴의 동기와 결정은 모두 그 자신으로부터 비롯된다. 궁극적으로 그가 믿는 것은 이런 것이다: 뭔가 계속 탐구해 나갈수록, 미지의 영역은 점점 더 커진다는 것.
Searle's motivations and his agendas ar his own, and could best be described as philosophical. Ultimately, he believes only this: the larger the searchlight, the larger the circumference of the unknown.

서릴은 신을 믿지 않지만, 가끔 일출의 빛 뒤에 가려진 신을 본 것 같다고 생각한다. 물론 그것이 정말 신에 대한 것인지, 혹은 자기 자신에 대한 것인지는 서릴 자신도 확신할 수 없다.
Searle does not believe in God. But he thinks that sometimes he glimpses God, hidden in the sunrise. Whether this tells himself something about God, or something about himself, is unclear to him.

이카루스 시스템이 유일하게 '닥터'를 꼭 붙여서 부르고 있습니다. 물론 캡틴은 이름을 부르지 않고 '캡틴'이라고 부르긴 합니다. 다른 사람은 딱히 호칭을 붙일만한 것 같지 않기도 하지만, 그렇다고 서릴에게만 꼭 그렇게 닥터를 붙여야 할 이유도, 딱히는, 없는 것 같습니다만(ㅋ)


역시 풀네임은 알려지지 않았습니다만, 실제 인물 중에 '존 서릴(John Searle)'이라는 분이 있습니다. 언어철학자인 것 같습니다. 자세한 것은 잘 모르겠군요(ㅋ)

트레이(Trey)

트레이는 홍콩 출신으로, 수학에 놀랄만한 능력을 가지고 있다. 복잡한 계산도 암산으로 해낼 수 있는데, 예를 들면 파티 같은 데에서 아무런 날짜만 말하면 그 날짜의 요일을 계산해내는 시범을 보이기도 한다.
Trey has a prodigious ability with mathematics. He has can perform extremely complicated calculations in his head, and can perform the classic mathematician's party-trick: to tell you what day of the week any given date fell on.

12살 때는 Hong-Kong-King-Kong 바이러스로 악명을 떨치기도 했다. 그 바이러스는 단 하루만에 전세계 컴퓨터의 12%를 무용지물로 만들어, 1980년대 닌텐도 Donkey Kong 게임에 등장한 고릴라가 가슴을 두드리며 표효하는 장면만 뜨도록 만들었다.
When he was only twelve, he achieved a brief world-wide notoriety as the writer of the Hong-Kong-King-Kong computer virus, which wiped out the operational abilities of twelve percent of the planet's computers in a single day, freezing up the systems and replacing them with a picture of a gorilla beating its chest, swiped from the 1980s Nintendo Donkey Kong game.

당시 충분히 기소되어 소년원에 수감될 수 있는 나이였음에도 불구하고, 아시아 Space Program에 발탁되어 소년원 생활은 피할 수 있었다.
Although he was just old enough for criminal prosecution, he was spared any kind of juvenile prison sentence because he was talent-spotted by the Pan-Asian space program.

이후 19세까지 중국에서 일했으며, 코라존이나 카네다와 마찬가지로 미국으로 옮겨와 이카루스 프로젝트에 참여했다.
He worked in China until he was nineteen. Then, like Corazon and Kaneda, he relocated to the US to work on the Icarus project.

그의 천재적인 수학적 능력은 임무에서 그의 실수를 초래하는 원인이 된다. 트레이는 이카루스에게 비행 궤도 수정을 지시하지 않고 자신이 스스로 조작하는데, 그런 중요한 일을 다른 사람에게 맡긴다는 것을 충분히 신뢰하지 못하기 때문이다.
His extreme talent for mathematics is also the cause of his mistake on the mission. He is unwilling to give the role of recalculating the changed flight trajectory to Icarus, because he is afraid to delegate such an important task to anyone, or anything, else.

하지만 그가 오만하기 때문에 그렇게 결정한 것은 아니다. 단지 그의 관점에서 볼 때, 모든 상황과 모든 변수들에 대해 자신이 잘 알고 있어서 모든 것이 완벽히 자신의 통제 아래에 있어야 하기 때문일 뿐이다.
This decision is not born from arrogance. It is simply the safest option from his point of view - he knows the limits of his own parameters, and feels more comfortable if all variables are known to him, and under his direct control.

사실 트레이는 오만한 타입과는 거리가 멀다. 그가 자살까지 이르게 된 것 역시, 방열판의 각도를 맞추지 못한 실수를, 전적으로 트레이 자신 때문만은 아님에도 불구하고, 남의 탓으로 돌릴 수 없었기 때문이다.
In fact, Trey is the opposite of arrogant. His breakdown is a consequence of his inability to blame anyone else for the mistake on the shields but himself - despite the fact that the decision to go off mission was not his own.

이카루스의 모든 멤버 중 가장 친한 사람은 메이스이다. 트레이는 미혼이며, 사귀는 사람이나 아이는 없다. 트레이의 꿈에는 수열이 등장한다.
His closest friend out of the crew is Mace. Trey is not married, has no partner, and no children. When he sleeps, he dreams of number sequences.

풀네임은 알려지지 않았지만, '트레이'는 이름 같습니다. 성은 역시 중국식 성일 것 같구요. ('트레이 웡(Trey Wong)'이라던지? (ㅋ))
